Owner-Operators
Greenshields Family (John, Bec, Lexie & Doug)
We're a mixed Aussie-Kiwi-Ecuadorean family with a sense of fun and adventure. Having travelled to all 7 continents and lived in 4 of them, we value the experiences that life has to offer and are always seeking new and worthwhile challenges. In February 2018, we took over as the proud new owners of Whalesong Cruises from the previous owners, Virginia and Jason Brigden. With our commitment to the environment and sustainable business practices, Whalesong Cruises will continue to go from strength to strength thanks to our dedicated team.
Bec Greenshields
General Manager
Bec is from the lower North Island, NZ. She has a Masters Degree in Economics and Statistics (with a focus on Macroeconometrics), worked as a Statistician and then decided to take a career break to travel South America. After years of travel and living abroad, her career break morphed into a career change and she's never looked back. As the GM of Whalesong, she ensures our guests and suppliers alike, enjoy their time dealing with anything Whalesong related. Like most women with young kids and a business, alone time is a precious commodity so she spends it swimming, restoring old furniture, painting and blasting away on the karaoke machine.
Doug Greenshields
Lead Skipper
Doug was raised in rural Victoria on a large working sheep and beef farm. After leaving in 2005 to explore the world, he (and Bec) settled in Ecuador and built and ran an Eco Lodge for 10 years, whilst bringing two cherubs into this world. Doug is a jack of all trades. He helps Whalesong's valued guests stay informed, entertained and safe. His passion for showcasing our incredible backyard to the world is obvious. In his spare time (when he's having a break from maintaining Whalesong's engines to keep them in tip-top shape), you'll see Doug fishing and kayaking with the kids as well as serenading us with his 12 string guitar.

Rick (a.k.a Grinner)
Skipper
Have you figured out why we call him 'Grinner'? Even after 30 years of being around the whales, Grinner is still probably one of the most excited on the boat, when he sees them. His smile, laugh and joyous demeanour (as well as his many years of experience) makes everyone on board feel welcome, comfortable and safe. Grinner started working with us on Whalesong in the 2021 Whale Watching Season...he's happy to back with us again!
Celine
Deckhand
With a wealth of experience, there's no-one better to prepare and serve your food on the Hervey Bay Sunset Cruise than Rosie. She moved back to Melbourne late last year, but came back to the Bay a few months ago when she realised what she was missing up. We're glad to have her back on board Whalesong for a second Summer season!
Kate
Deckhand
Oh, we wish we all had as much wonderful energy as Kate. Our only foreign national at the moment, Kate hails from the UK. She's an Occupational Therapist by trade and moonlights as a deckhand with us. We love having her on board and we're sure you too!
John
Deckhand
The youngest member of the crew, is John. As the eldest child of the owners (Bec and Doug), he's in the early years of High school and spends holidays and some weekends working on the boat. He's saving up to build his new 'super computer'. Making the family proud! 🙂

Anything you need done behind the scenes, Kristy is our gal. The ultimate solution finder and multi-tasker too! Having lead her own hospitality teams, she knows what our guests are after. Customer service excellence!
